Rounding the mythical Cape Horn, A sailing experience

Around Cape Horn S/Y La Pinta

Rounding the mythical Cape Horn is a dream for any sailor as the Mount Everest is for climbers.
Everything begins in Ushuaia, which is the place where our sailing boat is waiting for us.
We plan to leave Jan 22th and so we did. The weather is very bad… we have to go to the Argentinean coast guard to leave Argentina. Today we are sailing east to Pt Williams Chile.
We have a lot of wind from the south west, 35 knots constant. It is windy and cold but sunny, and the suns always make the different down here.
In some moments of the trip to Pt Williams we had 50 knots gust, so we arrived very fast to our first stop.
strong wind from the SW to get to Pt Williams

Jan 23 and the 24th we had to wait in Pt Williams. The harbor was close because of the strong wind.
We had time to hike around the town and we got to see a lot from the Navarino Island.
Jan 25th, the wind still blowing in the morning but after midday we could leave from Williams to Pt Toro, always moving east. We spend the night on this last one.

beautiful views on our way to Pt Toro
Jan 26th, early start.. We leaved Pt Toro with the first light of the day. The water was very calm and we went across Nassau Bay. Here the weaves where running against the windJ. When we were about to start sailing the Bravo Channel …. The wind speed up, this always happens in this area.

We decided that the best option is to round Cape Horn that afternoon, so we continuous sailing and
around 17pm with 20knts wind from the SW we rounded the mythical Cape Horn using our genoa
and making a speed of 6 knots. As the tradition says we had to open a bottle and make a toast on
his Honor and thanks him for letting us pass.
We carry on sailing east and manage to arrive at Caleta Martial around 22pm.
Dolphins came to say hi, jumping around our boat. It was amazing to see them.
It seems that they were congratulating us for having round it Cape Horn.
At Caleta Martial we drop our anchor at 20 mtrs deep and we left another 40 mtrs in case of
strong wind which is very usual here.
We had a wonderful dinner and when to sleep; tomorrow again a long sailing day was waiting for us.

leaving Pt Toro
Around Cape Horn

Jan 27th, we took up the anchor and stared sailing at 8am. The plan was to get across
Nassau Bay and reach the Lenox Island by the afternoon.
That day started very calm and later on the wind from the North came.
We manage to get to Caleta Lenox at 16pm that day.
The Bay here is very shallow and the anchor hit the bottom at 6 mtrs, we left 25 mtrs more
The people from the Chilean coastguard that live on this island was super nice,
they invited us for tee and then we went for a walk along the coast.
Lenox Island is very beautiful and gives the opportunity to have a nice rest from the boat.

Jan 28th , after a very nice breakfast we lift our anchor and sail away with the intention to reach
Caleta Banner in Picton Island.
The weather was great, very sunny and the water completely flat.
Before mid day we were dropping the anchor again.
Caleta Banner is a fantastic place and more when you have a day with more than 24c°J.
We took our chance and walk all along the coast. Some of us went for a swim.
We had spent the whole day exploring a place where no one else was.

Jan 29th , After a good night of sleep… we lifted the anchor and sail west direction,
back to Pt Williams. On our way we stopped to watch a penguin colony that lives at Martillo Island.
Lucky us we had wind from the east J all our way.

Jan 30th, the forecast for that day said that we would have some strong wind from the SW,
after midday.. So we deseeded to leave very early in the morning.
At 5:30 am we were leaving Pt Williams to Ushuaia.
The colors on the sky were sooo beautiful, the sunrise was one of the nicest one that I have seeing.
On our way we watched the sea lions colonies and the cormorant colonies,
was a great trip back to Ushuaia. By 11am we were already at the Nautico yacht club .
That last night we had a wonderful Argentinean asado and celebrate our successful
expedition to Cape Horn.
